St. John's Women's Soccer Set For Weekend Matches Against Sacred Heart And Miami (Ohio)

    The St. John's women's soccer team, currently receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, looks to continue its season-opening roll with matches at Sacred Heart and against Miami (Ohio) this weekend. The Red Storm is undefeated at 2-0 on the young season, and travels to Fairfield, Conn., on Friday for a 4 p.m. matchup against the Pioneers before returning to Belson Stadium on Sunday for a noon contest with the RedHawks.

    Weekend Storylines
    • St. John's got off to a hot start with two wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Cornell in its first weekend of action at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm showed its high-powered offense in defeating the Knights, 3-1, and the Big Red, 4-0.
    Krystle Jalalian led the way with three goals (two vs. FDU; one vs. Cornell) and an assist, but many different players registered points, as rookie Raelynne Lee tallied two goals and Erin Bohn and Kelly McConnell added one apiece. Nicole Canning, meanwhile, registered an assist for her first career point.
    • After her league-leading seven-point performance, Jalalian was honored as the BIG EAST's Offensive Player of the Week and was named Big Apple Soccer.com's Player of the Week.
    • This is the second year in a row that St. John's has started a season 2-0 under 14th-year and reigning BIG EAST Coach of the Year Ian Stone.
    • St. John's leads the all-time series with Sacred Heart, 1-0-0. In the programs' only meeting last season (Sept. 10, 2006), the Red Storm came away with a 1-0 victory off of a Bohn penalty kick. In the sole meeting between St. John's and Miami University, the teams played to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 6, 2002.

     

     

    In The Rankings
    • For the first time in school history, St. John's received votes in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, released Sept. 4, 2007.
    • The Red Storm is ranked fourth in the Northeast Region by the NSCAA and fifth in the region by Soccer Buzz Magazine.

    Weekly Honors Roll In For Jalalian
    • After totaling three goals during all of 2006, Jalalian exploded offensively in the first weekend of 2007, scoring three goals and adding an assist. The senior forward was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week along with Big Apple Soccer.com's Player of the Week.

    Statistically Speaking
    • The Red Storm put up impressive numbers in its first two wins of the season and led the BIG EAST in points (17), goals (7) and goals per game (3.5).
    • Individually, Jalalian led the league in points (7), points per game (3.5), goals (1.5) and goals per game (1.5).

    Recapping Preseason Exhibition Action
    • St. John's played two preseason exhibition matches at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm tied Stony Brook, 0-0, on Aug. 21, 2007.
    • In its next outing, the Red Storm defeated Hofstra, 3-1, on Aug. 25. Jalalian, Kaitlin Haas and McConnell all scored goals.

    Red Storm Receives Highest Preseason Ranking Ever
    • After last year's banner season and all butone player returning to this year's squad, the St. John's Red Storm was honored with its highest ever preseason ranking by Soccer Buzz Magazine. In the Northeast region, St. John's was ranked fifth.

    BIG EAST Predictions
    • St. John's was picked to finish fourth in the American Division of the BIG EAST Confernce. West Virginia was picked to win the division, while Notre Dame was the preseason favorite in the National Division. The poll was conducted by the league's 16 head coaches.

    Clinton Joins Staff As Full-Time Goalkeeping Coach
    Jessica Clinton, a 2004 Boston University graduate and four-year starting goalkeeper for the Terriers' women's soccer team, will join St. John's as an assistant coach, head coach Ian Stone announced.
    • "The St. John's women's soccer program is very excited to welcome Jessica Clinton to our coaching staff," Stone said. "Jess was a high-level goalkeeper who enjoyed a great college career at Boston University. Her knowledge of the position and passion for the game make her a valuable addition to our family."
    • Clinton comes to St. John's after serving as a volunteer assistant coach at Bergen County Community College in Paramus, N.J., and has been involved as a counselor and trainer at several goalkeeping academies.
    • A goalkeeper for the America East Champion BU women's soccer team in 2000, 2001 and 2003, Clinton was a three-time all-conference selection. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2003 America East Championship Tournament and was a National Soccer Coaches Association of America regional selection in 2001 and 2003.

    Preseason Notebook
    STONE COACHES SUCCESSFUL UNDER-17 REGION I TEAM AT INTERREGIONALS (Dec. 2006) ... Stone coached the Under-17 Region I Team at Interregionals in Coral Springs, Fla., to a 2-0-1 record, including a victory over the Under 16 National Team. Stone was selected as head coach of Region I in the 1989 age group. Region I, one of four regions in the country, extends from Maine to Virginia on the east coast.
    Susan Byrne COMPETES FOR IRELAND AT THE 2007 ALGARVE CUP (March 2007) ... For the third time in her career, Byrne was called up to compete with the Irish National Team, this time in the prestigious Algarve Cup in Portugal. She previously played in a friendly match in the fall of 2006 and in the World Cup Qualifying Rounds during the summer of 2005.
    RECAPPING THE SPRING SEASON (April 2007) ... St. John's defeated the New York Athletic Club, Columbia, the New York Magic, Villanova, Fordham, the Long Island Rough Riders and the Japanese College All-Stars in spring action. The Red Storm also had a scoreless tie with Princeton and did not allow a goal in any of the eight spring matches.
    FRANCESCA DECRISTOFORO NAMED TO 2007 W-LEAGUE ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM (Aug. 2007) ... Former St. John's women's soccer defender DeCristoforo was named to the 2007 W-League All-Conference Team, the United Soccer Leagues announced. DeCristoforo was selected to the 11-person All-Eastern Conference Team, representing the Long Island Rough Riders. She played for St. John's from 1993-1997, starting 66 out of 68 total games. She recorded two goals and five assists while playing for the Red Storm and was named to the All-BIG EAST second team in 1997. In addition, she was honored by St. John's University in 1997 with the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, which is given annually to the student-athlete who demonstrates the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifice in seeking to attain the highest ideals of true sportsmanship.
    Sarah McGrath COMPETES AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES (Aug. 2007) ... A native of Naas, Ireland, McGrath represented her country at the World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. McGrath and Ireland defeated France and advanced to the semifinals of the Games.
    Anna Torregiano NAMED TO WOMEN'S SUPER-20 ALL-LEAGUE TEAM (Aug. 2007) ... Torregiano, an incoming freshman for the Red Storm, was named to the Women's Super-20 All-League Team, the United Soccer Leagues (USL) announced. She is a graduate of Friends Seminary in New York, N.Y., where she finished her career with 90 goals and 42 assists.


  • St. John's University Big East NCAA
