Jamaica, N.Y. – St. John’s University women’s soccer’s 2003 recruiting class ranks 73rd of 299 Division I teams, according to Soccer Buzz. Of the forty teams in the Northeast region, the Red Storm recruits rank sixth.
St. John’s national ranking is the first in program history. Last season, the Red Storm were ranked 11th in the region and 7th the year before. The BIG EAST has 10 teams ranked in the top 100. In the regional rankings, St. John’s sits behind the 2002 BIG EAST Champions Connecticut and Boston College, who hold the top two spots. Five of the Red Storm’s 2003 opponents appear in the Northeast rankings. Head coach Ian Stone’s top 100 recruiting class consists of six highly talented student-athletes, including three NSCAA High School All-Americans. Holly Ryder is a center midfielder from Plantation, Florida, who will be transferring from the University of Kansas. A four-time All-County honoree, Ryder was named a 2002 McDonald’s/Powerade High School All-American as well as a NSCAA High School All-American. Natasha Lee is an NSCAA/adidas High School All-American forward from Albuquerque, New Mexico. A standout athlete in New Mexico, Lee’s resume includes NSCAA/adidas New Mexico Player of the Year and Gatorade New Mexico Player of the Year. Erinn Flaherty is a midfielder from Clifton Park, New York, who earned NSCAA/adidas High School All-American honors in 2002 as well as being named NY State Section II Player of the Year. Ellen Hartman is a 5-11 goalkeeper from St. Paul, Minnesota. A three-time All-Tri-Metro Conference member, Hartman led her team to the 2001 Sectional Championship and the state quarterfinals. Erin Bohn is a defender/midfielder from Mission Viejo, California. In 2002, Bohn guided her team to the CIF Championship. Cami Katz is a defender/midfielder from Ocean City, New Jersey. In 2002, Katz was named the Cape Atlantic League’s “Best Defender”, while also earning First Team All-Cape Atlantic honors. Coming off their first-ever ECAC Championship, the Red Storm are primed and ready for 2003. St. John’s opens its season at the Rhode Island Tournament from August 29 – August 31.
