June 6, 2005 Queens, NY - St. John's women's soccer standout Susan Byrne has been selected to play for Ireland's full national team, and will represent her country in the upcoming qualifying rounds for the 2007 Women's World Cup, which will be held in China. The team will compete against the Faroe Islands today in a friendly match in preparation for the upcoming qualifying matches. Byrne and Ireland will match-up against Russia later this summer in the first round of action for a coveted spot in the 2007 World Cup. Byrne just completed her freshman season with the Red Storm. After joining the team after preseason in 2004, she literally made an immediate impact, scoring her first collegiate goal just minutes after checking into the game for the first time in a win over Wagner on September 12. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, the defender was also a member of the Irish National Team in 2004. Other international experience includes competing in the Olympic qualifying rounds in Paris, France in 2003 with the Under-17 Olympic Squad.
