St. John's Women's Soccer has been a varsity sport since 1987. In 13 seasons, they have become one of the most promising soccer programs in the Big East.Head Coach Ian Stone took the helm of the Red Storm for the 1994 season and had immediate success. In his inaugural coaching season, he guided the women's soccer team to a 14-4-1 season and a Big East Tournament Championship. Stone's squad started the tournament facing Connecticut and defeated them, 1-0. Then, the Red Storm defeated Boston College by the same score in the championship game. Cristin Burtis scored both goals for St. John's and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. The following season, St. John's entered the Big East. Their first round-robin Conference game was on September 3, 1995 where the rookie team fell to national powerhouse Notre Dame 9-0. The team's first Big East victory came against Providence on October 9, 1995, by a score of 2-1.The next time the team reached a post season was in the 1997 ECAC Tournament. However, their dreams of another title went unrealized as they fell to Army, 2-0.
