Providence, RI - The St. John's women's soccer team concluded their BIG EAST regular season with a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Providence this afternoon at Glay Field in Providence, RI. St. John's improves to 10-7-1 overall and 4-6 in the BIG EAST, while the Friars fall to 5-12-0 overall and 2-8 in the conference. Providence was on the attack early in the first half as a shot by Maura Robertson knocked off the crossbar and back into play just seconds into the half. Neither team had another great opportunity until the 22nd minute when sophomore Erinn Flaherty (Clifton Park, NY) fed Heather Cook (Seattle, WA) streaking towards the goal from the right side. Cook accepted the ball but her shot sailed just high as the Providence keeper Ashley Fedyshyn cut off her angle. The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 31:29 on a goal by BriAnne Bruni. Lauren Vecchione sent a cross into the middle of the box that was headed by Bruni past St. John's keeper Jaime Beran (Tuscan, AZ) for the goal. St. John's tried to bounce back quickly as a shot by junior Kaitlin Schmidt (Centereach, NY), less than a minute after the Friar goal, was deflected out of bounds by Fedyshyn diving to the left post. After two early attempts by Natasha Lee (Albuquerque, NM) in the first ten minutes of the second half came up empty, the Red Storm finally pulled even with Providence at 57:05. Schmidt stole the ball from a Friar defender in the right corner and carried the ball towards the goal area. Once she got in front of the net, Schmidt cut back and fired a shot past Fedyshyn to the right post for her fourth goal of the season. With 15 minutes to go in the second half, St. John's put together back-to-back scoring opportunities. It started with a give-and-go connection between Lee and Schmidt that ended with a Schmidt shot that ricocheted off the crossbar and back into play. Seconds later, a blast by Krystle Jalalian (Burien, WA) from the 18-yard box was pushed over the crossbar on a nice save by Fedyshyn.
At 79:41, St. John's scored the game-winning goal on a header by Susan Byrne (Dublin, Ireland) for her second goal of the season. Off a corner kick by Flaherty from the left side, Byrne accepted the ball at the far post and knocked it past Fedyshyn into the right corner for the 2-1 lead. Beran recorded seven saves in the win for St. John's, while Fedyshyn saved six Red Storm shots |
