QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team held No. 20 Notre Dame scoreless through the first 74 minutes of play, but the Fighting Irish rallied with three late goals to come away with a victory Sunday at Belson Stadium. Junior goalkeeper Rebecca Capinera recorded four saves between the posts for St. John's, which fell to 8-2-2 (3-2-0 BIG EAST) on the year. Notre Dame improved to 7-4-1 overall, 5-0-0 in the league. St. John's held its own for most of the game, winning balls and connecting passes for scoring opportunities. Perhaps the Red Storm's best chance came with less than a minute left in the first half, when freshman Maria DeMatteo gathered a through pass from Courtney Lane and fired a shot on goal. Lauren Karas made the save, however, to preserve the 0-0 tie after 45 minutes of play. The chances dwindled for St. John's in the second half, as it posted one shot compared to five in the first stanza. Kerri Hanks finally broke the scoreless tie in the 74th minute, beating Capinera high from short range on assists by Brittany Bock and Ashley Jones. In the last five minutes of the game, the Fighting Irish added two more goals (Bock, Susan Pinnick) to earn the 3-0 victory. The game marked just the second loss of the year for St. John's, and both setbacks have come against nationally ranked foes. St. John's begins a four-game road swing Friday at Marquette. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. (ET).
