BUFFALO, N.Y. - The St. John's women's soccer team concluded play at the University of Buffalo Classic Sunday, playing Maine to a 0-0 tie. Sophomore Tara Mendoza had a shot hit the crossbar with under a minute left in regulation, but St. John's was unable to capitalize on its 20-3 advantage in shots and settled for a tie. Black Bears goalkeeper Jasmine Phillips turned in a standout performance, making nine saves including two in the overtime periods. In addition to its advantage in shots, the Red Storm also took eight corner kicks compared to zero by Maine. With the tie, the Red Storm's record went to 5-0-1, while Maine's record is now 1-3-2. The Red Storm's 20 shots were spread throughout the roster, with Vaila Barsley and Maria DeMatteo leading the way with three apiece. St. John's best opportunity in the overtimes came on a shot by Nicole Canning in the 95th minute that was saved by Phillips. Phillips came up big again in the second overtime period, stopping a shot by Kelly McConnell. As part of the UB Classic, offensive and defensive players of the game were named. In the Red Storm's tie with Maine, Barsley was the defensive and Erin Bohn was the offensive player of the game. In St. John's 2-0 victory over Vermont on Friday, Bohn was selected as the offensive and Mendoza was the defensive player of the game. St. John's now turns its attention the BIG EAST slate, as it hosts Syracuse Friday at 6 p.m. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m., and the men's soccer team will play West Virginia following the women's game (approximately 8 p.m.)
