Port Washington, N.Y. - The St. John's women's golf team leads after the first round for the second straight tournament, carding an opening round 26-over par 314 at the Hofstra Invitational. The St. John's men's golf team is in second place after shooting an opening round 9-over par 297 and only trails Siena College by one stroke.
When you look at the top of the women's leaderboard there is nothing but red. The Red Storm rounded out the top five with their once again consistent play. Led by junior Jaclyn Sanders (Ontario, Canada) who shot a five-over par 77 and is currently in first place. Sophomore Katie Lebel (Ontario, Canada) carded a six-over par 78 and is in second place. In third place is sophomore Christin Thompson (Ontario, Canada) with a seven-over par 79. Sophomore Maggie Steciuk (London, Ontario) finished the day in fourth place, shooting a first round eight-over par 80. Rounding out the top-five was junior Jennifer Rhee (Rydal, Pa.) who finished the day with a 10-over par 82. The Red Storm women are 22 strokes ahead of Long Island University heading into the final round of the tournament.
Along with the women, the men performed great under the winter-like temperatures. The men finished the first round in second place but only trail Siena College by one stroke. The Red Storm were led by sophomore John Stoltz (Middletown, N.Y.) who shot an opening round one-over par 73, currently in third place. Sophomore Brian McArdle (Huntington, N.Y.) carded a two-over par 74 and finished the day tied for sixth. Finishing out the top-ten was junior Ian Middleton (British Columbia, Canada) , shooting a four-over par 76. Freshman< Joe Yastrub (Lake Grove, N.Y.) shot a six-over par 78 and is tied for 14th only eight strokes out of the lead.
The Red Storm women's and men's golf team will return to the links tomorrow, Tuesday, April 6th for the final round of the Hofstra Invitational. |
