SYRACUSE, N.Y. Syracuse senior Jaime James scored 15 of her game-high 25 points in the second half to lead the Syracuse women's basketball team to an 80-60 win over St. John's at Manley Field House in the regular-season finale for both schools.
Syracuse enters the BIG EAST Tournament as the seventh seed with a 16-11 overall record and a 9-7 mark in conference play. St. John's ends the year 3-24 overall and 0-16 in the BIG EAST. The Orangewomen came out sluggish in the first half, shooting 7-of-24 (29.2 percent) from the floor, but played the Red Storm to a 28-28 draw at intermission thanks to 12-of-17 (70.6 percent) shooting from the free throw line. Freshman Patrycja Gulak (Olsztyn, Poland) was 4-5 from the field in the first half, posting eight points. With SU ahead 39-34 at the 15:31 mark, James lead a 19-4 surge over the next 5:32 as the lead swelled to 58-38. James scored 11 points during the run, including three three-pointers. The Red Storm was unable to recover and would get only as close as 71-55 at the 2:58 mark. Sophomore Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) led the Red Storm with 16 points,connecting on seven of eight attempts from the free throw line. Stevens also grabbed six rebounds and dished out five assists in 39 minutes of action. Gulak finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Junior Amanda Rawson (Palos Park, Ill.) and freshman Mary Pat Statler (New Cumberland, W.Va.)each chipped in nine points, while junior Creasie Fowler (Milwaukee, Wis.) added seven. Senior Kenyawna Hudgens (Washington, D.C), playing in her final game for the Red Storm, had five assists, three points, three rebounds and a steal.
The Red Storm did not qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament and finish their season with a 3-24 overall record while going 0-16 in the conference.
