South Orange, N.J. The St. Johns University womens basketball team fell to Seton Hall University, 74-46, this afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The Red Storm fall to 3-13 overall and 0-5 in the BIG EAST, while the Pirates improve to 9-6 and 1-3.
Seton Hall got off to an early 11-0 lead, holding the Red Storm scoreless until 15:31 when freshman Mary Pat Statler (New Cumberland, W.Va.) connected on her first three of the day. Sophomore Shemika Stevens (New York, N.Y.) followed with a three of her own, and freshman Patrycja Gulak (Olsztyn, Poland) added a jumper, to cut the Pirates lead to three. That would be the closest the Red Storm would get for the rest of the game. Seton Hall would go into halftime with a 37-24 advantage. Seton Hall would continue to build their lead in the second half. The Red Storm shot just 29.0 percent from the field in the second half. The Pirates also outrebounded St. Johns 26 to 12 in the half. Seton Hall would take the game 74-46. Statler and Stevens led the Red Storm in scoring, each posting nine points on the day. Statler hit three of four attempts from three-point range. Stevens added two rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals to the Red Storm effort. Senior Rasheedah Brown (Newark, N.J.) pulled down a team-high five rebounds, posted five points and recorded three steals on the day.
The Red Storm return to action next Saturday, January 19 when they travel to Virginia Tech to take on the Hokies in BIG EAST action.
