QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's women's basketball team got off to a quick start against Maine, opening up with a 15-0 run that eventually transpired into a 30-point win over the Black Bears, 80-50, on Friday night at Carnesecca Arena. The win was the team's third of the season by 20 points or more and marks the second time this season St. John's has put up 80 points. In addition, the squad's record improves to 6-0 on the season when it scores 70-or-more points and continues its flawless streak at home, 4-0. Two Red Storm players scored in double figures in the contest. Monique McLean led the way with 16 points, marking the eighth time this season she has finished tops on the squad. Recee Mitchell scored in double figures for the first time this year with a 12-point contest. The sophomore also chipped in eight boards for the team best. Senior Tiina Sten's three-block performance was the team best and it also put her career total at 69, moving into a tie for 10th place in the St. John's career record books. All 12 active St. John's players saw action in the contest, with 11 at least pulling in a rebound and 10 scoring three points or more. The Red Storm offensive attack flourished from start to finish and really capitalized on the fast break by scoring 18 points off of it. The scoring show continued throughout the rest of the way as St. John's always had a double-figure lead. Taking advantage of the defense, the Red Storm used its strong post play to score 44 points in paint to Maine's 22. Shooting 34.1 percent in the first half, the team out-scored Maine, 34-19. The largest lead St. John's had in the first half was 19, but Maine managed to close out the frame scoring four points to cut the deficit down to 15 before the break. St. John's came out firing in the second half and a jumper by McLean with 16:03 on the clock put the Red Storm up by 21, 45-24. The team maintained at least a 20-point advantage the rest of the way despite the 43.3 scoring performance by Maine (1-8). The Red Storm (7-2) will continue non-conference action on the road, traveling to Birmingham, Ala., to participate in the UAB Blazer Invitational Dec. 17-18.
