Flushing, N.Y. The St. Johns University mens tennis team battled for a big win today against Army at the USTA National Tennis Center. The Red Storms 5-2 victory over the Black Knights marks the first time St. Johns has beaten West Point since April 2, 1996.
On Senior Day, it was the four seniors who fought tough to win this match. At the No. 1 singles position senior Erik Scharf (Bronxville, N.Y.) easily put away John Sabia, 6-1, 6-2. E. Scharf has now gone undefeated in dual match play this season. Senior Brian Scharf (Bronxville, N.Y.), in the No. 4 singles spot, defeated Andy Burdette, 6-2, 6-4. B. Scharf has not lost a match since February 12th when he lost to Beu Brier of Brown, 6-4, 7-6. Senior Nikhil Teppara (Mississauga, Canada) played a strong three-set match, but was unable to get the win. Teppara fell to Rafael Albonez, 6-4, 1-6, 2-6. Senior Cameron Lore (Toronto, Canada) captured the deciding match for the Red Storm. Lore downed Matt Thines, 6-1, 7-6 (5) for the point. Sophomore Jake Maxwell (Glen Cove, N.Y.) came through at the No. 2 position with a big win against Kent Ball. Maxwell won the first set, 7-5, dropped the second 3-6 and rebounded with a well-earned 6-3 win. Junior Fabian Carchi (Corona, N.Y.) was unable to put Arnie Albonez away. Carchi dropped the first set 4-6, won the second set, 6-3 and fell 1-6 in the third set. St. Johns began the day by capturing the doubles portion of the match. E. Scharf and Maxwell defeated Burdette and Ball, 8-3. Carchi and Lore clinched the doubles point for the Red Storm with an 8-6 win over Thines and Sonny Avichal. The Red Storm ends the regular season with a 9-6 overall record (4-2 in BIG EAST). St. Johns now awaits the decision of the BIG EAST tennis committee. On Monday morning the committee will decide whether or not the Red Storm is invited to the BIG EAST Championships in Coral Gables, Fla.
