Villanova, Pa.  The St. Johns University mens tennis team improved its conference record to 4-2 with a 6-1 win over BIG EAST rival Villanova (8-8 overall, 0-3 in BIG EAST) this afternoon. The Red Storm (8-6 overall, 4-2 in BIG EAST) now own the second-most wins in the BIG EAST (4) behind Rutgers, who went undefeated in the conference (6-0). Though, the Red Storm has an impressive conference record, their fate still lies in the hands of the BIG EAST championship seeding committee.

St. Johns was unable to capture the doubles portion of the match. Fabian Carchi (Corona, N.Y.) and Cameron Lore (Toronto, Canada) won SJUs only doubles match, defeating Kaster and ONeill of Villanova, 6-3. Heading into singles play, the Red Storm trailed 0-1.

In singles action, the Red Storm won all six points. No. 1 singles player Erik Scharf (Bronxville, N.Y.) continued his unbeaten streak, coasting to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Adams. In the second slot, Jake Maxwell (Glen Cove, N.Y.) battled through three sets, to emerge with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Schofield. Carchi pulled out a win in the third position after dropping the second set to Rohde. Carchi rebounded in third set and took the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Lore had no difficulty with Devine in the fourth slot, winning 6-4, 6-2. Christian Carere (Brampton, Canada) fought for a win in the No. 5 position. Carere went on to defeat Moore, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Nikhil Teppara (Mississauga, Canada) earned his second victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Toppel.

The Red Storm will have the opportunity to improve their record to 5-2 in the BIG EAST and further impress the seeding committee when they return to action Thursday versus the Providence College Friars at the USTA National Tennis Center at 1 pm.
