Flushing, N.Y.The St. Johns mens tennis opened up 2-0 in the BIG EAST this week with a 4-1 victory over Georgetown on Monday and a 6-0 defeat of UConn yesterday, in matches played at the United States Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The Red Storm improve to 7-8 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST.
In the match versus Georgetown, St. Johns won the doubles point when the No. 1 team of Jake Maxwell (Glen Cove, N.Y.) and Arnaud Agniel (Aix-en Province, France) earned an 8-4 victory and the No. 2 team of Morgan Bauer (New York, N.Y.) and Boris Chiporuka (Brooklyn, N.Y.) won 8-6. In the singles matches, Agniel, Maxwell, and Bauer earned straight set victories to secure the match for the Red Storm. Agniel, playing the No. 1, defeated Cravedi, 6-1, 6-0, while Maxwell, playing the No. 3, posted a pair of wins, 6-0, 6-0 over Belelieu. Bauer defeated Bildman at the No. 4, 6-4, 6-2. In the match versus UConn, St. Johns earned the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. At the No. 2, Bauer and Chiporuka defeated Zubatsky and Ravesloot, 9-7, while at the No. 3 Todd Goldberg (Pomona, N.Y.) and Rick Ferreira (Fort Beaufort, S. Africa) defeated Sweatt and Stinson, 8-5. In the singles matches, the Red Storm won all five matches completed, including a trio of three set thrillers. Agniel, playing the No. 1, defeated Furman, 6-4, 3-6, 11-9, while Chiporuka, playing the No. 5, defeated Sweatt 4-6, 6-4, 10-8 in a pair of marathon matches. Nick Stocker (Norwich, England) earned a three set victory at the No. 6, while, Ferreira and Bauer added straight set victories at the No. 2 and No. 4 spots. The St. Johns mens tennis team returns to action this weekend when they play host to West Virginia and Rutgers and travel to Boston College to take on the Eagles.
