CORAL GABLES, FLA. - The St. John's men's tennis team fell to the Miami Hurricanes, 4-0, in the third place match at the BIG EAST Championships this afternoon. After beating Rutgers 4-0 in the quarterfinals on Thursday, St. John's fell 4-0 to the No. 1 seeded Virginia Tech Hokies in the semifinals yesterday. The Red Storm close out the 2004 spring season at 12-11 overall. Miami pulled ahead early as the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairs won, 8-3 and 8-2, respectfully, to take the first point. The No. 1 match was tied at six before being called off. In singles action, Miami's No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 each won in straight sets to take the match. Miami's Colin Purcell defeated Morgan Bauer 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1, while Claudio Halim fell to the Hurricanes' Jeremiah Fuller 6-4, 6-1 and Todd Goldberg was beaten by Miami's Tim Krebs 6-1, 6-1 for the win. The Red Storm's David Nylen was leading his No. 2 match by one set before the match ended.
Miami finishes in third place at the 2004 Championships, having beaten Boston College in the quarters, before falling to Notre Dame in the semi's yesterday.
