QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's tennis team improved to 9-10 on the season after winning its final BIG EAST match of the regular season, 6-1, over Villanova. The Red Storm improved its BIG EAST record to 2-2, while the Wildcats fell to 6-11-1 overall (0-4 BIG EAST). The Red Storm swept the doubles point as each spot picked up victories. The pair of juniors Artem Vlasenko/Gustavo Loza won at the No. 1 spot, 8-4 over Dimitri Chimerakis/Brian Maher. At No. 2, the duo of junior Alex Svetlakov/freshman Asaf Honig also doubled up their opponents 8-4, while sophomore Derek Wallensteen and freshman Pavel Cerny teamed up to win their matchup at No. 3, 8-4. In singles play, the top five spots swept in straight-sets. Vlasenko beat VU's top man, Dimitri Chimerakis, 6-3, 6-1. Svetlakov won over Brian Maher 6-4, 6-0. Loza, Cerny and Honig completely controlled their matches at Nos. 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Honig won his tilt 6-1, 6-0, while Loza and Cerny both defeated their opponents by 6-1, 6-1 scores. After the match was clinched, Wallensteen fell in a quick pro-set by the score of 8-6. The Red Storm men's tennis team is scheduled to play the Marist Red Foxes on Friday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
