DREAM SEASON ENDS FOR RED STORM SOCCER AS INDIANA TOPS ST. JOHN'S, 2-1, IN SECOND OVERTIME
 

 
COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Dreams of a second national championship for the St. John's men's soccer team came to a halt on Friday night as Indiana's Vijay Dias scored in the second overtime period, lifting the fourth-seeded Hoosiers to a 2-1 win over the eighth-seeded Red Storm in front of 4,820 at Columbus Crew Stadium.

The loss ends St. John's spectacular season at 17-3-3 overall. The Red Storm won their league record sixth BIG EAST Conference Tournament Championship en route to 17 wins, which ranks tied for fourth in a single-season at St. John's. The three losses are tied for the second-fewest in school hisotry.

"I can't be more proud of this team," St. John's head coach Dave Masur said following the game. "I really have had a team in my 11 years at St. John's that worked as hard as they did, so I'm very, very proud.

"Their character, focus on the field and attitude made them very special." Indiana scored the decisive goal in the second overtime when Hoosiers junior first-team All-American Pat Noonan beat a St. John's defender on the near side of the field and fed freshman Mike Ambersley. Ambersley quickly dished to Dias, who was streaking down the field and blasted a shot from about 15 yards out that beat Red Storm junior goalkeeper Guy Hertz to the upper left post.

"It's the toughest feeling I've ever had," St. John's senior midfielder Jeff Matteo said. "For guys like me and Shal (fellow senior Shalrie Joseph), it's tough to swallow. We had a great group this year and I'm going to miss it." After a scoreless first half, the Red Storm came out strong in the second frmae and quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Jeff Matteo controlled the ball in the middle of the field and drew defenders to him as he approached the box, where he was pulled down near the box by IU defender Danny ORourke. The referee called for a free kick and Matteo worked his around the six-man Hoosier wall, giving the Red Storm a 1-0 lead at the 49:03 mark. His ninth goal of the season  a career high was the first scored on Indiana goalkeeper Colin Rogers in nearly 700 minutes.

Indiana pushed forward following the SJU goal, with Noonan touching the ball for one of the first times all game, sending a shot wide. St. Johns, however, continued to push forward, with Matteo taking another shot that was saved and then in the 61st minute, sophomore Matia Damiani made a diving stab at a ball crossed by Matt Groenwald. The shot went barely high and nearly gave St. Johns a 2-0 lead.

Indiana was able to tie the game at 69:53 remaining when Phil Presser played a ball into Ambersley, whose shot from 22 yards out beat Hertz to the upper left corner.

Both teams had chances through the remainder of the half, but were not able to capitalize. The Red Storms best shot with a blast from freshman Chris Corcoran stopped by a diving Rogers with five minutes left. With under two minutes left, the Hoosiers had a pair of chances. Presser picked up a loose ball and sent a shot wide from the near side. At the 89:00 mark, Noonan took advantage of a slip on the slick surface by an SJU defender and blasted a shot from 15 yards out on the near side that went just wide, sending the game to overtime.

In the first overtime period, Indiana jumped out quickly with a shot by Ned Grabavoy from 12 yards out on the far side of the box pushed away by a diving Hertz. A pair of corner kicks following the shot were cleared. The Red Storm had chances with Matteo and Groenwald getting shots off.

Indiana moved the ball to start the second overtime period and the Hoosiers had a shot blocked near the 25-yard line by Corcoran. The deflection went toward the box, but Matteo leaped above the crowd and headed it away. The ensuing throw-in the 109th minute was saved by Hertz.

In the first half, Indiana had a strong chance in the early minutes as Ambersley dribbled to the near side of the field and launched a shot from 18 yards out that hit the cross bar. In the 10th minute, the Red Storm countered, with Matt Groenwald crossing a ball to Angel Rodriguez near the post. Rodriguezs header went just wide.

Minutes later, sophomore Chris Wingert headed a corner kick from Simone Salinno, but Rogers made the save. The Red Storm continued to press and a free kick went through the IU defense, but the team could not capitalized.

In the 33rd minute, after 10 minutes of back and forth play, Matteo played the ball back to junior Alberto Duenas, whose blast from 30 yards out went high. In the 40th minute, Indiana took an indirect kick from the far side and the cross into the box was blocked out by Wingert. The Hoosiers maintained possession, but were not able to mount any significant charges. In the 42nd minute, Matteo took an indirect kick from the far side of the field that Matia Damiani headed, but just out of the reach of Shalrie Joseph near the box. With less than a minute left in the half, Hertz came out to nearly the 20-yard line, booting a loose ball away. Seconds later, IU junior Michael Bocks shot from 18 yards out on the right side was saved by a diving Hertz.

Indiana outshot St. John's, 16-11, overall, while both teams took two corner kicks. Hertz finished with three saves for the Red Storm, while Rogers had two for the Hoosiers.
