JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The St. Johns University mens soccer team continued its remarkable 2001 season this past weekend, toppling previously undefeated and No. 1 ranked Southern Methodist, 2-0, in Dallas, advancing to the NCAA Tournament College Cup Final Four. This is St. Johns second appearance in the Final Four, the last coming in 1996, when the Red Storm won the NCAA Championship.
St. Johns, ranked eighth nationally, will play Indiana University on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in one of two semifinal matches at the Columbus Crew Stadium in Columbus, Ohio (North Carolina and Stanford meet in the other semifinal at 5 p.m.). Fridays semifinal match will be available via satellite on KU Band - SBS 6, Transponder 7. The game will be shown on a taped delay basis on ESPN. The winner of Fridays match will advance to the NCAA Division I Championship match on Sunday, December 16 at 1 p.m., playing either Stanford or North Carolina. That game will be televised live on ESPN. Using a balanced attack, the Red Storm have charged through the 2001 season and enter Fridays match with a 17-2-3 overall record, winning their last six matches. On Saturday, St. Johns scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the game to beat the Mustangs on their home field and advance to its second Final Four. Tickets can be obtained by calling 1-877-CREW-FAN (273-9326). Prices range from $20 for lower reserved, $18 for upper reserved and $15 for North/South Ends. The prices are the same for the championship games. Packages for both games are available as well, with $36 for lower reserved, $32 for upper reserved and $27 for North/South Ends.
