JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The eighth-ranked St. Johns mens soccer team is one step away from its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Division I Mens Soccer Final Four. The road to the College Cup will go through Dallas, where the Red Storm will faced No. 1 ranked Southern Methodist on Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. (ET) at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.
Tickets for this weekends game are $7 for adults and $5 for students. The game is also being played on the same field where the NCAA Division I Womens Soccer Final Four is being played. St. Johns advanced to the Elite Eight for the third time in the last six years with a thrilling 2-1 triple overtime win over Penn State on Saturday in Garden City. Senior forward Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored the game winner in the 129th minute off a free kick from classmate Jeff Matteo (Stormville, N.Y.). Were excited, St. Johns Head Coach Dave Masur said. Every team wants to get to the Final Four and we know we have a big challenge in front of us. Weve worked very hard to get here and know that well have to perform at our best to reach our goals. St. Johns enters this weekends match with a 16-2-3 overall record, having won its last five games and seven of the last eight overall. Matteo leads the team this season with eight goals and five assists for 21 points, while sophomore Angel Rodriguez (Toms River, N.J.) is second on the team with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. Joseph, the teams leading scorer last year, has played on defense most of this season, but still ranks third on the team with seven goals and four assists for 18 points. The Red Storm won the BIG EAST Tournament Championship on November 18, beating defending national champion Connecticut, 1-0, and then posted wins over Massachusetts and Penn State in the NCAA Tournament. St. Johns last advanced to the Elite Eight in 1998, losing to Santa Clara, 2-1. The Red Storms first appearance in the Elite Eight saw the team beat William & Mary, 2-1 in overtime, and then beat Creighton and Florida International en route to its first-ever national championship. SMU, meanwhile, won the Missouri Valley Conference Championship and has been atop the national rankings for nearly two months with a perfect 21-0-0 record. The Mustangs have been led by senior forward Luchi Gonzalez, who has 21 goals and 12 assists for 54 points this season, and junior midfielder Diego Walsh, who has tallied 10 goals and 11 assists for 31 points. Senior goalkeeper Byron Foss has posted 11 shutouts with a 0.48 goals against average this season. The winner of Saturdays match will advance to the Final Four and play either Clemson or Indiana. The Final Four is being hosted by the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio on December 14 and 16.
