JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The second-ranked St. Johns University mens soccer team will begin its quest for a second-straight trip to the NCAA Division I College Cup on Wednesday night, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The Red Storm, who earned a first round bye, will kick off against the Knights at 7 p.m. at Belson Stadium on the Queens campus. Tickets are $10 for reserved chairback and $3 for endzone seats.

The Red Storm were led during the season by a stingy defensive unit that registered a school record 13 shutouts and carries a 0.40 goals against average into Wednesdays game. That unit was led by junior Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.), the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team Verizon Academic All-American, is a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, which is given to the mens national player of the year.

They were balanced on offense, with senior Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.) and sophomore Chris Corcoran (Marshfield, Mass.) leading the way. Both second-team All-BIG EAST selections, they tied for the team lead in points with 15 apiece. Bradley, a first-team Verizon Academic All-District I selection, scored four goals and chipped in a team-high seven assists, while Corcoran finished with a team-best six goals and three assists for 15 points.

FDU, the winners of the Northeast Conference, advanced to the second round with a win over Patriot League champion Holy Cross on Saturday afternoon. The game finished with a 1-1 tie, but the Knights prevailed in penalty kicks, 7-6. It was the teams third-straight win via penalty kicks. They have been led by junior midfielder Nate Olson and freshman midfielder Nada Gottesman, who have scored five goals and added two assists to lead the team with 12 points apiece. Gottesman scored on a header in the first half of Saturdays win and converted a penalty kick, earning National Team of the Week honors from CollegeSoccerNews.com.
