Storm Edge JMU, 1-0 in NCAA First Round

Harrisonburg, Va. - Junior Shalrie Joseph scored in the 76th minute giving 11th ranked St. Johns what proved to be the game winning goal in a 1-0 win over James Madison in first round action of the NCAA Tournament.

The Red Storm who improve to 14-4-2 overall will play the winner of Sundays match between Lehigh and Virginia sometime next weekend. I thought we played better in the second half. We made some substitutions to stay fresh and continued to push it forward. We played a tough schedule all year and know you have to play 90 minutes. We are very fortunate and looking forward to next week, Head Coach Dave Masur said after todays win.

The decisive score came at the 75:50 mark when junior Rich Bradley found classmate Jeff Matteo alone on the left side of the box. Matteo crossed the ball to Joseph who beat JMUs Jeff Kovolenko at the lower near post. The goal was Josephs team-leading 14th of the season.

After a scoreless first half the Red Storm continued to control the ball in their offensive zone with Joseph missing on a header, freshman Chris Wingert sending a shot high off a direct kick and classmate Angel Rodriguez sending a shot wide off of a throw-in.

James Madison peppered St Johns in the opening minutes of the game but the Red Storm turned the table and controlled the game and their offensive zone much of the time. Matteo took two shots in the first 15 minutes, a header from senior Adam Mauer and a cross from sophomore Dave ODonnell both off the mark.

With about four minutes to go in the first half the Red Storm appeared ready to take the early lead with Joseph and Bradley each taking shots in the box but were not able to capitalize.

James Madison had a couple of chances midway through the second half, but St. Johns goalkeeper Jeff Stoklosa made big saves keeping the game scoreless until Josephs goal. Stoklosa stopped seven shots for his eighth shutout of the year (9-3-2).
