UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Rutgers junior Dennis Ludwig scored at the 111:51 mark on a feed from freshman Sherif El Bialy, lifting seventh-seeded Rutgers to a 3-2 overtime win over St. Johns in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Mens Soccer Tournament, held at Mitchel Athletic Complex, home of the A-League Long Island RoughRiders Sunday night. The loss drops St. Johns to 13-4-2 overall as they await next Mondays NCAA Tournament pairings.
The Red Storm, seeded second in the conference tournament and ranked seventh nationally, trailed 2-1 at the break, but tied the game at the 46:43 mark when junior Shalrie Joseph (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the game, with assists to freshman Marlon Rojas (Peytonville, Arima, Trinidad) and junior Rich Bradley (Bayport, N.Y.). After a scoreless overtime period, Rutgers continued to pressure the offensive end and finally put the game-winner in when El Bialy approached the box and a shot was deflected by St. Johns goalkeeper Jeffrey Stoklosa (Newark, Del.). Ludwig, however, was able to pick up the loose ball and put it in for the winning goal. St. Johns had taken a 1-0 lead at the 6:48 mark when Joseph took passes from Rojas and classmate Paul Szewczyk (Staffordshire, England). Joseph beat RU goalkeeper Ricky Zinter to the far post for the lead. At the 30:28 mark of the first half, the Scarlet Knights tied the game when El Bialy controlled a deflected ball and beat Stoklosa for an unassisted goal. About 10 minutes later, at the 40:33 mark, Ludwig broke away and was fouled by Stoklosa in the box. El Bialy took the penalty kick and put a shot past the St. Johns keeper in the lower left corner, giving RU a 2-1 lead.
