July 13, 2005 Queens, NY - Former St. John's University men's soccer standout Shalrie Joseph was one of 11 players selected to play in the Major League Soccer All-Star Game, it was announced today by league officials. The MLS All-Star squad will square off against English Premier League club Fulham FC at the 2005 Sierra Mist MLS All-Star Game, which will be held on Saturday, July 30 at Columbus Crew Stadium (ABC, 3:30 p.m.). Joseph, a midfielder in his third year of play with the Revolution, has led New England to a 9-2-5 overall record and a second place standing in the Eastern Division of the league. FC Dallas, in first place in the league's Western Conference, led all teams with four players, while New England had three players, including Joseph, goalkeeper Matt Reis and Clint Dempsey. This is the second All-Star appearance for Joseph, who made the team last year. One of the top defensive midfielders in the MLS, Joseph has been considered the "hub of the wheel" for the Revolutions' build-up style of play from the back line. A standout at St. John's after transferring in from junior college, Joseph helped lead St. John's to a pair of NCAA Tournaments, including the 2001 NCAA Final Four. As a senior, when he was named first-team All-BIG EAST, Joseph moved from his natural forward position to sweeper and spent the majority of the season on defense. He still finished third on the team in scoring with seven goals and four assists for 18 points, and helped lead the Red Storm to the 2001 BIG EAST Tournament Championship. In 2000, Joseph led the Red Storm in scoring 14 goals with two assists for 30 points, including six goals and 12 points in BIG EAST games. St. John's finished 14-5-2 overall and was second in the conference with an 8-2-1 record. The team reached the NCAA Tournament for the ninth-straight year and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the fifth-straight season. His two-year career total of 21 goals ranks 10th all-time at St. John's. A native of Grenada, Joseph has also made several appearances with his native national team. St. John's opens the 2005 season on Friday, September 2, playing Holy Cross in a tournament at Rutgers. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
