Two SJU Student-Athletes Named Verizon Academic All-American

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. Johns University senior fencer Alex Roytblat (Ashdod, Israel, Ort Olesky) and senior soccer player Jeffrey Stoklosa (Newark, Del./Salesianum) have been named to the First Team Verizon Academic All-Americans University Division Fall-Winter At-Large Team, it was announced today.

This is a tremendous honor for Alex and Jeff, St. Johns Associate Vice-President and Director of Athletics Ed Manetta said. Both students have worked very hard on and off the field to make themselves better and to help make their teams among the best in the country. We are extremely proud of their accomplishments.

Roytblat, a four-time All-American in the epee, helped lead St. Johns to its first national championship in fencing last month. He carries a 3.90 grade point average in criminal justice and plans on attending law school next year.

He finished in fourth place at the NCAA Championships, took the silver medal as St. Johns won the Intercollegiate Fencing Association Championships in early March and posted a 35-6 overall record during the regular season. Roytblat finished among the top-three in the epee at the NCAA Championships during his first three years, capturing the individual title as a sophomore, finished second as a junior and third as a freshman.

A senior goalkeeper, Stoklosa is a senior carrying a 3.90 grade point average in computer science. He helped lead the St. Johns mens soccer team to its ninth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and fifth-straight Sweet 16 appearance. The Red Storm finished 14-5-2 overall and 8-2-1 in the BIG EAST, second overall.

Stoklosa was one of the keys on a St. Johns defense that allowed opponents to score only 13 goals all season, including four in 11 BIG EAST matches. He finished the season with a 0.65 goals against average, tied for the sixth-best mark in a season at St. Johns, and recorded eight shutouts. His career goals against average of 0.75 is tied for the second-best career mark in school history.

Roytblat and Stoklosa are the second and third, respectively, student-athletes at St. Johns to earn Academic All-American honors this season, joining senior football player Josiah Mooney (Tyler, Texas/Bishop Gorman), who was named to the Division I-AA Athletic Directors Academic All-Star Team. They are the first student-athletes to earn Verizon first-team honors since 1993, when former St. Johns football standout, and current assistant coach, Anthony Russo, earned first team honors.
