Red Storm Closes Out Conference Schedule At Home On Saturday For Senior Day

St. John's will honor its class of 10 senior student-athletes in its ECAC season finale against Fairfield.

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's will host ECAC-foe Fairfield in its final conference game of the season on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Saturday's contest will feature a special pregame presentation honoring the student-athletes of the Class of 2008. These 10 seniors are the first-ever class of four-year veterans to graduate since the lacrosse program was reinstated in 2005.
St. John's is 1-5 in the conference, and 1-10 overall and is coming off a tough 17-7 loss at Hobart, last Saturday. Fairfield is 4-8 on the season, and 2-4 in league play. Saturday's game will be their second this week after they defeated Massachusetts on Tuesday, 10-9. Saturday's game will be Fairfield's season-closer.
The Series Against The Stags
Saturday's contest is the sixth between the two schools and the second in league play.
Fairfield leads the all-time series 3-2 is 2-0 over St. John's in ECAC match ups. The Stags won the last three contests, while the Red Storm victories came in 1981 and 1982, the first two years of the St. John's lacrosse program. Under the tutelage of head coach Bill Miltenberg, the Red Storm won 17-6 at home in `81 and dominated 26-6 in Connecticut.
The team's last met in Fairfield, Conn., on April 29, 2007 at Lessing Field. The Stags jumped to a nine-goal lead after 17 Stag shots on goal after two periods. In the second half, Tom Michaelsen scored back-to-back goals to get the Red Storm on the board. Michaelsen closed out the game with a hat trick, his fifth of the season. The final score was 13-7 in the Stags favor.
In the prior two ECAC meetings between the teams, the Stags have won 7-2 and 17-5, in 2005 and 2006, respectively.
The last time Fairfield played on DaSilva it was under the lights on April 29, 2006. The Red Storm honored current assistant coach John Kutner in his senior-day celebration.
Last Time Out
Seven Red Storm lacrosse players recorded a point in St. John's 17-7 league loss at Hobart on Saturday. Senior Rob Gannon had a team high of three points with two goals and a season-first assist, while junior Malcolm Miles was second with two goals. Freshman Terrence Leach scored his career-first goal for the Red Storm.
Gannon Storming Through A Late Season Scoring Roll
Senior Rob Gannon has tallied seven points in the last three games. Against Penn State on April 12, he led the team in goals with his first hat trick of the season to lead the Red Storm to an 11-7 victory. He notched another three points on April 19 at Hobart and scored a goal against UMass on April 5. His late-season scoring-streak has him tied for second on the team in goals with 10.
Storm Tracker
Senior Justin O'Donnell leads the team in points with 21 (15 goals, 6 assists). Against Penn State on April 12, he tallied both a career high in points with six and assists with four. O'Donnell has earned ECAC weekly honors twice this season.
Junior Trevor Michaelsen is second in points and goals with 14 and 10, respectively. Michaelsen has scored a goal in three of the last four games played..
Comparing ECAC Victories
St. John's defeated Penn State on April 12 to earn its first ECAC victory this season. Fairfield has defeated two of the eight team field, Massachusetts, 10-9, on April 22 and Rutgers, 10-7, on March 8. The Red Storm has played both teams closely, losing 13-8 against UMass on April 5 and 9-6 the weekend before at Rutgers on March 29.
Super Seniors
For the first time since the program's reinstatement, St. John's will compete with a core group of 10 senior student-athletes, all of whom have played with the Red Storm since their freshman season.
Saturday's contest will mark the final home game for the seniors, who began their careers against Robert Morris on Feb. 27, 2005. As freshmen, the seniors played the Fairfield Stags in their second-ever contest on March 2, 2005.

Scouting The Fairfield Stags
Fairfield is 4-8 overall and 2-4 in the ECAC after earning a program-first victory over University of Massachusetts, 10-9 on Tuesday.
Before Tuesday's win, the Stags were riding a eight-game losing streak since their last ECAC victory over Rutgers on March 8.
Against UMass, freshman Ryan Mulford broke the 9-9 tie with an unassisted goal with 36 left to play, giving the Stags their first-ever win over the Minutemen. Fairfield came from behind in the second period and scored six straight goals to take the lead, 7-3. Massachusetts tied it up in teh fourth before Mulford scored the game winner.
Senior Travis Nelson leads the Stags with 22 points on 12 goals and 10 assists. Junior Chris Ajemian is second in points with 19 on 13 goals and six assists and freshman Doug Kuring is third with nine goals and six assists for 15 points.
Sophomore goaltender Joe Marra has started nine of the Stags' 12 games and has a 3-5 record between the pipes. Senior Jeff Cliente has started the other three and is 1-2 so far. Together they have a.506 save percentage and an average of 9.56 goals against.
On Deck St. John's will travel to Durham, N.C. to face-off against 2007 NCAA finalist Duke University in a Sunday afternoon match up on May 4. The meeting will be the sixth between the teams.
