Queens, NY - Freshman Tom Michaelsen (Bethpage, N.Y.) had a hat trick and attacker Patrick Zeis (St. Louis, MO) tallied five points, two goals and three assists to lead St. John's to a 9-4 non-conference win over the University of Hartford at DaSilva Memorial Field this afternoon.

The Red Storm (2-3 overall) trailed 3-2 but rallied to tie on a goal by Jack Rosson (Severna Park, MD) assisted by Zeis at 7:00 of the second period to knot the score at 3-all heading into intermission. Michaelsen's second goal of the game midway through the third period gave St. John's the lead for good at 4-3 and Zeis again got a key assist to pace the offensive attack.

"We dominated the third quarter and took control of the game," St. John's head coach Rick Sowell said. "We needed a win and we're getting better with each game we play."

Goalie Matthew Duca (West Islip, NY) had 15 saves for the victors and notched his second victory. Reserve net minder Will Carmody (Cortland, NY) saw his first action of the season playing the final 2:29 and made two saves to preserve the win.

St. John's midfielder Felix Forbes (Corning, NY) and graduate student Mike McGuire (Arlington, VA) added one goal and one assist apiece while Robert Gannon (Port Washington, NY) tallied a score to finish off the scoring on the afternoon. In addition, freshman Devin Madden (Kensington, MD) won 7 of 11 face-offs to keep possession of the ball during key stretches of the game as the catalyst on offense for the Red Storm.

 

 

ECAC Conference play kicks off again on Saturday, March 19th when St. John's travels to Loyola (MD) to play the Greyhounds in Baltimore. Face-off is set for 1 p.m. The Red Storm (0-1 ECAC) are in search of their first victory in league play.

Good tickets are still available for the remaining lacrosse home contests at DaSilva Memorial Field (Sat., March 26th vs. Air Force at 1 p.m., Weds., March 30th vs. Rutgers at 3 p.m., Sat., April 2nd vs. Lafayette at 1 p.m. and Sat., April 23rd vs. Hobart at 1 p.m.

Prices are $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and $2 for groups of 20 or more in advance of game days. St. John's students with valid I.D. and children 12 and under are free.
