JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. Johns University junior golfer Jesse Fitzgerald (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) a two-round score of three-under par 139 at Island Hills Golf Club on Wednesday and finished in second place, qualifying for the 101st United States Amateur Championship. The U.S. Amateur will be held at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta from August 20-26.
Fitzgerald fired a seven-under par 65 in the first round at Island Hill Golf Club, in Sayville, and qualified after shooting a two-over par 74. He joined qualifier winner Gary Blados (Shelter Island, N.Y./Shelter Island), a former member of the SJU golf team, in qualifying for the United States Amateur. Junior Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and sophomore John DeForest (Cottekill, N.Y./Rondout Valley) are scheduled to compete in qualifiers today. Fitzgerald was an All-BIG EAST selection last year and led the Red Storm to a second place finish in the BIG EAST and an appearance in the NCAA East Regional. He won two events this year, posted six top-10 finishes and finished the year with a 73.50 stroke average. Fitzgerald and senior Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) have been named team captains for the 2001-02 academic year. The Red Storm open the 2001 season at the Navy Fall Invitational on September 7.
