JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. Johns University junior golfer Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished in second place at the 46th Annual Ike Metropolitan Golf Associations/MetLife Stroke Play Championship, held this past weekend at the Fairview Country Club in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Svoboda, playing out of Winged Foot Country Club, fired a three-round score of one-under par 215, finishing two shots off the pace of George Zahringer III of Deepdale, the only player to ever win both the Met Open and Met Amateur Championship in the same year (1985). The Red Storm golfer fired a two-under par 70 in the first round on Sunday and was tied for the tournament lead with Zahringer and legendary amateur golfer Jerry Courville, Jr. of Shorehaven. A second-round two-under par 70 during the morning round on Monday gave him a two-stroke lead entering the final round of play. Svoboda, however, posted a three-over par 75 and Zahringer bounced back with a five-under par 67 to claim the title. Svoboda led St. Johns to one of its best seasons ever during the 2000-01 season, winning four individual titles as the Red Storm claimed four team titles and finished second in the BIG EAST Championship before playing in the NCAA East Regional. Svoboda was ranked among the top-75 golfers in the country by GolfStat and was rated second in District I. On the amateur circuit, Svoboda has had a tremendous amount of success. He was a semi-finalist for the 2000 Met Amatuer, was a member of the team winners at the 1999 and 2000 Ike, won the 1997 MGA Junior and was the low amateur at the 2000 New York State Amateur. In addition, Svoboda was a quarterfinalist at the 2000 Westchester Amateur, the winner of the 2000 MGA Intercollegiate and runner-up at the 2000 Mittlemark Invitational.
