Jamaica, N.Y.--St. Johns junior
John DeForest (Cottekill, N.Y.) finished tied for sixth at the Ike MGA/MetLife Stroke Play Championships hosted at the Montclair Golf Club. DeForest carded a five-over par 215 for the three round event. DeForest is having a solid summer, with a victory earlier this month at the Ulster County Amateur Championship.
Senior Andrew Svoboda (Stamford, Conn.) finished tied for 10th shooting a seven-over par 217. Svoboda was in the top-five when he made the turn in his final round but a pair of double bogies took him out of contention. Svoboda also had a victory earlier this month, winning the 83rd Westchester Golf Association Amateur Championship.
Alumnus Jesse Fitzgerald (Sayville, N.Y.) finish tied for 18th carding a 13-over par 223. Fitzgerald was one of the top golfers for the Red Storm in 2001-02 and will be difficult to replace.
DeForest, Svoboda and junior Kyle Sleasman (Loudonville, N.Y.), who qualified for the New York State Open to be played at Bethpage, are the top returnees for the Red Storm golf team in 2002. The trio is expected to lead St. Johns to its third straight NCAA tournament berth.
