Andrew Svoboda (Stamford, Conn.) earned a victory in the 83rd Westchester Golf Association Amateur Championship held at Fenway Golf Club this past weekend. Svoboda, representing Winged Foot Country Club, was up two holes after the morning round and opened his afternoon round with six birdies in his first 11 holes to take a commanding lead. He was able to hold off runner-up Joe Sommers and sealed the championship after going up by five holes with four left to play.
Svoboda qualified second for the match play championship by shooting a one-under par 70 at Bonnie Briar Country Club earlier this spring. He won first and second round matches over Paul Colligen (3 and 2) and Mark McEvoy (4 and 3), respectively. Svoboda solidified his spot in the final match with victories over Steve Oh and Joe Collins in the quarter and semifinals, 3 and 2.
St. Johns junior John Deforest (Cottekill, N.Y.) also qualified for the match play championship shooting a two-over par 73 at Bonnie Briar CC. However, DeForest would fall in the first round to the eventual runner-up Sommers, 3 and 2.
