St. Johns Finishes 26th at NCAA Golf Regional

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The St. Johns University mens golf team shot a 20-over par 308 and finished 26th of 27 teams at the NCAA East Regional, which concluded on Saturday afternoon at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Red Storm finished the three-day tournament at 54-over par 918.

East Tennessee State won the regional, finishing at 36-under par 828, eight strokes ahead of North Carolina State. Florida finished in third place at 27-under par 837, followed by Clemson (22-under par 842) and Georgia (21-under par 843) and BIG EAST Champion Virginia Tech (21-under par 843). Georgia Tech finished in seventh place (18-under par 846), Georgia Southern took eighth (15-under par 849), Alabama-Birmingham (nine-under par 855) was ninth, and Ole Miss (eight-under par 856) beat Duke in a playoff for 10th place.

University of Florida freshman Camilo Villegas carded a five-under par 67 in the final round to finish at 15-under par 201 and take medalist honors. He finished two strokes ahead of Georgia Techs Bryce Molder, the top-ranked player in the country.

The top 10 teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, being held from May 30 to June 2 at Duke Universitys Golf Club. Those teams will be joined by Furmans Kirk Satterfield, who finished in fifth place at nine-under par 207, and Vanderbilts Brandt Snedeker, who tied for 10th place at six-under par 210.

St. Johns was led by sophomore Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y./Mamaroneck), who tied for 64th place at two-over par 218. Svoboda, ranked 69th nationally by GolfStat, posted a one-over par 73 in the final round. He shot a two-under par 70 in the first round and a three-over par 75 in the second round.

Sophomore Jesse Fitzgerald (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) shot a five-over par 77 in the final round and finished in a tie for 94th place at nine-over par 225. Junior Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) finished in 126th place at 18-over par 234, while senior Andrew McKay (Collingwood, Ontario/Collegiate Institute) and freshman Mike Smith (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day) tied for 135th place at 31-over par 247.

 

 


St. John's University Big East NCAA
