St. Johns Tied for 24th at NCAA Golf Regional

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- The St. Johns University mens golf team shot a 17-over par 305 in the second round and remained in a tie for 24th place at the NCAA East Regional, being played at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Virginia on Friday afternoon. The Red Storm are tied with the University of Hartford for 24th in the field of 27 teams at 34-over par 610, 58 strokes off the lead of eighth-ranked East Tennessee State.

ETSU posted a 10-under par 278 during Fridays second round and leads the field at 24-under par 552, three strokes ahead of North Carolina State, second at 21-under par 555. Florida (16-under par 56), Georgia Tech (12-under par 564) and BIG EAST Champion Virginia Tech (12-under par 564) round out the top-five. UAB stands in sixth place (nine-under par 567), while Georgia and Duke are tied for seventh place (eight-under par 568), Clemson is in ninth (seven-under par 569) and Georgia Southern holds on to 10th place (six-under par 570).

University of Florida freshman Camilo Villegas leads the individual competition at 10-under par 134, two strokes better than Chris Mundorf of North Carolina State.

St. Johns is being led by sophomore Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y./Mamaroneck), who stands in a tie for 56th place at one-over par 145. Svoboda was tied for 16th place after shooting a first-round two-under par 70, but posted a three-over par 75 Fridays second round.

The top 10 teams from the East Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships, being held from May 30 to June 2 at Duke Universitys Golf Club. The top two individuals not among the qualifying teams will also advance to the national tournament.

After struggling in the first round with a six-over par 78, sophomore Jesse Fitzgerald (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), who was second on the team in stroke average, bounced back with a two-under par 70 in the second round. He stands in a tie for 77th place at four-over par 148.

Junior Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) is tied for 122nd place at 12-over par 156, senior Andrew McKay (Collingwood, Ontario/Collegiate Institute) is tied for 135th place at 21-over par 165 and freshman Mike Smith (Rye, N.Y./Rye Country Day) is tied for 137th place at 23-over par 167.

The final round of play is on Saturday.
