Little Rock, Ark. The St. Johns mens golf teams season ended today at the NCAA Central Regional in Little Rock, Arkansas. The team posted a three round score of 59-over par, which earned them a 23rd place finish. St. Johns did not qualify for the NCAA Championships and ends one of its most successful seasons under head coach Frank Darby.
The Red Storm were led by senior Jesse Fitzgerald (Sayville, N.Y.), who finished tied for 50th place at eight-over par 224. Fitzgerald finishes his career with three individual titles and seven top-five finishes in just two years with the program. Junior Andrew Svoboda (Stamford, Conn.) carded a nine-over par 225 to earn a tie for 55th place. Svoboda led the Red Storm in almost every statistical category in 2001-02 and he looks to add to his six career individual championships next season. Senior Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) scored a 17-over par 233 to put him in a tie for 101st place. Saladino finishes his career at St. Johns with five top-10 finishes. Sophomores John DeForest (Cottekill, N.Y.) and Kyle Sleasman (Loundonville, N.Y.) finished in a tie for 127th place at 27-over par 243. The duo returns next season and should be impact players for the Red Storm.
The St. Johns golf team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons ever, winning four individual and three team championships. The Red Storm return a solid lineup and should be one of the top teams in District II next season.
