Jamaica, N.Y.- St. Johns senior golfer Andrew Svoboda (Stamford, Conn.) was selected to play as an individual at the 2003 NCAA East Regional in Auburn, Ala., it was announced today by the NCAA selection committee. The Regional Championship will be played on May 15-17 at the Auburn University Golf Club. This marks the third consecutive season that Svoboda has played in an NCAA Regional, as the Red Storm team posted back-to-back NCAA selections in 2001 and 2002. The team struggled thru most of the 2002-03 but that didnt slow down Svoboda. He completed arguably the greatest season in Red Storm history, winning individual medallist honors in seven out of 11 events and earning All-BIG EAST honors with a fourth place finish at the 2003 BIG EAST Championships.
St. Johns Director of Golf has nothing but praise for his top golfer, stating, I believe this a great opportunity for Andrew to showcase his talent against the top collegiate golfers. The East Regional is loaded with talent and I truly believe that Andrew has the talent to go all the way and win the NCAA Championship. It has been fun watching him for the past four years. Svoboda led the Red Storm in every major category in 2002-03, including: stroke average (71.75), percentage of rounds counted (100%), average strokes off-the-lead (1.7), top-five (8), top-10 (10), and top-20 (10) finishes. He shot even-or-under par in 15 of his 29 rounds played. Svoboda has earned numerous accolades throughout his career. He is the All-Time winningest golfer in St. Johns history with 14 individual titles, a four-time All-BIG EAST selection, three-time All-District II selection, twotime U.S Amateur qualifier and four-time defending club champion at Winged Foot. He was named a Ben Hogan Award semifinalist, an award given to the top collegiate golfer, during his senior season.
