Red Storm Golf Finishes Third at BIG EAST, Svoboda Ties for Second

JAMAICA, N.Y.  The St. Johns University mens golf team shot a 22-over 302 in the third and final round, and finished in third place at the BIG EAST mens golf championship, held at the Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Indiana on Sunday afternoon.

Defending conference champion Virginia Tech fired a 25-over par 865 and cruised to its second-straight championship title, beating host Notre Dame by 17 strokes.

St. Johns junior Andrew Svoboda (Stamford, Conn.), who entered the final day of competition leading the field of 30, shot a four-over par 74 and finished in a tie for second place with Notre Dames Steve Ratay. Virginia Techs Johnson Wagner shot a tournament-best two-under par 68 in the final round and captured medalist honors at one-over par 211.

Svoboda earned All-BIG EAST honors with his performance, along with senior Jesse Fitzgerald (Sayville, N.Y.), who tied for seventh place at 10-over par 220.

Senior Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) tied for 14th place at 17-over par 227, sophomore John DeForest (Cottekill, N.Y.) finished in a tie for 18th at 19-over par 229 and sophomore Kyle Sleasman (Loudonville, N.Y.) finished in 25th place at 25-over par 235.

St. Johns will now await the selections for the NCAA Regionals. As one of the top-ranked teams in its district, the Red Storm should qualify for their second-straight NCAA East Regional. The regional will be held from May 16-18 at Settingdown Creek in Atlanta, Georgia.
