Jamaica, N.Y.- The St. Johns mens golf team travels to Notre Dame this weekend in search of a program and BIG EAST record 10th team conference championship and eighth individual title. The Red Storm enter the tournament as the number two seed and ranked number three in District II by golfweek.com. The team will look to improve on last years second place finish, with junior Andrew Svoboda (Stamford, Conn.) leading the way in defense of his individual title.
St. Johns is enjoying one of its most successful seasons under head coach Frank Darby. The Red Storm have earned three team and five individual titles, while posting eight top-five finishes in 11 events this season. The three team victories came at the James Madison Invitational, Treasure Coast World Trade Center Heroes Classic and Anteater Invitational. St. Johns is led by Svoboda, who has earned two individual tiles, four top-fives, five top-10s, and nine top-20s in eleven events. His two victories came at The McLaughlin and the Anteater Invitational when he shot a three-under par 207 and a two-over par 218 respectively. Svoboda leads the team in stroke average (73.19), percentage of rounds counted (100%), and average strokes off the lead (3.1). Svobada has to be considered one of the favorites entering the BIG EAST championship. Senior Jesse Fitzgerald (Sayville, N.Y.) is having a career year. After a getting off to a slow start in the fall, Fitzgerald came on strong in the spring and was rewarded by posting a first place finish at the Anteater Invitational. He is second on the team in stroke average (74.03), average strokes off the lead (4.0), and top-five finishes (3). Fitzgerald has had a tremendous spring season and could make a move to the top of the leader board. Junior Kyle Sleasman (Loudonville, N.Y.), playing in his first season at St. Johns, has been a solid addition to the Red Storm. Sleasmans best result came at the McLaughlin when he carded a one-over par 211, to earn a third place finish. He is second on the team in rounds counted (90.3%), top-fives (3), and third in stroke average (74.46) and average strokes off the lead (4.4). Sleasmans solid and consistent play could help the red storm secure the team championship. Senior Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) has had a solid career for the Red Storm. His best finish this season came at the Treasure Coast World Trade Center Heroes Classic when he carded a four-over par 148, to earn him a tie for ninth place. Saladino is fourth on the team in stroke average (76.26), average strokes off the lead (6.6), and top-20 finishes (5). Saladino has the capability of putting up big scores and could play a big part in the teams success. Sophomore John Deforest (Cottekill, N.Y.) got off to a fast start in the fall by posting a victory at the James Madison Invitational, carding a seven-under par 135. Deforest has posted two top-10 finishes and carries a stroke average of 77.20. St. Johns tees off at the BIG EAST with 36 holes on Saturday April 20 and concludes the championships with 18 holes on Sunday April 21. The site of the tournament is Warren Golf Course located on the campus of Notre Dame.
