JAMAICA, N.Y. -- A balanced attack with four players among the top-20 after the first round of play led the St. Johns mens golf team to a four-stroke lead at the Princeton Invitational, being held at the Springdale Golf Club in New Jersey.
The Red Storm fired a two-over par 286 and lead by four strokes over Georgetown, Princeton and Seton Hall, tied for second place at six-over par 290. Penn State, the top-rated team in the Mastercard Collegiate Rankings in District II, is tied for fifth place at eight-over par 292 with William & Mary. St. Johns was led by sophomore Jesse Fitzgerald (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison), who is in third place after posting a two-under par 69. Classmate Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) shot an even-par 71 and is tied for eighth place, while sophomore Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y./Mamaroneck) and senior Andrew McKay (Collingwood, Ontario/Collegiate Institute) are tied for 16th place at two-over par 73. Freshman John DeForest (Cottekill, N.Y./Rondout Valley) is tied for 78th place at nine-over par 80. The final round of play will be held on Saturday.
