JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jesse Fitzgerald (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) fired a tournament low four-under par 68 and captured individual honors, leading the St. Johns mens golf team to a fifth place finish of 11 teams at the Liberty Ramada Classic, held at The Waters Edge in Penhook, Virginia.

The Red Storm carded a two-over par 290 in the final round as SJU finished in fifth at 16-over par 592, 18 shots off the pace of winner Penn State, who finished at two-under par 574. James Madison finished in second place at five-over par 581, followed by Richmond (10-over par 586), William & Mary (13-over par 589) and St. Johns.

We beat all the teams had to beat, St. Johns Head Coach Frank Darby said. That was a really good performance today after not playing well on Monday. We will still left some shots out there tonight, but it was a good showing.

Fitzgerald entered the second round in third place, one shot off the pace, after a first round two-under par 70. He took medalist honors with a six-under par 144. It was the sophomores second individual win this season for Fitzgerald, who lowered his stroke average this spring to 73.25.

I felt nice and relaxed, Fitzgerald said. I was hitting the ball well and making putts. I didnt make many mistakes, and that was the key. I made one bogey yesterday and one today, but I had two birdies on the back and the helped. We came back today and played well.

Sophomore Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y./Mamaroneck) finished at one-over par 145 after a one-over par 73 in the second round and finished in seventh place. It was his fourth top-10 finish this season.

Senior Andrew McKay (Collingwood, Ontario/Collegiate Institute) tied for 31st place at nine-over par 153, sophomore Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) tied for 38th place at 12-over par 156 and freshman John DeForest (Cottekill, N.Y./Rondout Valley) tied for 54th place at 21-over par 165.

The Red Storm continue playing this week, competing on Friday at the Princeton Invitational.

This was good for everyones confidence, Fitzgerald said. Weve got a big tournament this weekend and weve got the attitude that we can compete with anyone. Weve all played in the top amateur tournaments, so we go in there thinking that we can compete and were not just some little school from the Northeast.
