St. Johns Golf Finishes Sixth at Pirate Spring Intercollegiate

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Led by sophomore Andrew Svoboda (Harrison, N.Y./Mamaroneck), who finished in second place overall, the St. Johns mens golf team finished sixth of 20 teams with a 24-over par 888 at the East Carolina Spring Intercollegiate, held at the Bradford Creek Golf Club in Greenville, North Carolina. Campbell University fired a six-over par 870 to claim the team title, followed by Elon College, East Carolina, Marquette and Bethune-Cookman.

Andrew had a great weekend and we did what we had to do in terms of beating teams from our district, St. Johns Head Coach Frank Darby said. Its looking more and more like well get a bid to the NCAA Tournament and these guys are really playing like they belong.

The Red Storm, who enjoyed one of their best fall seasons ever with four tournament wins, stood in fifth place after the first day of competition on Saturday. St. Johns shot an 18-over par 594, 12 shots off the pace of Campbell.

The team fired a six-over par 294 in the final round, finishing 18 shots off the pace. Svoboda fired a three-under par 69 in the final round, finished tied for the individual lead with a five-under par 211. He finished second overall, with George Masons Craig Mason taking individual honors. Svoboda shot one-under par 71 in the first and second rounds, en route to his third-straight top-five finish this spring.

Sophomore Jesse Fitzgerald (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) finished in 14th place, his third top-20 performance this spring, at three-over par 219. Fitzgerald carded a one-over par 73 in the final round.

Sophomore Joe Saladino (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) tied for 61st at 14-over par 230, senior Andrew McKay (Collingwood, Ontario/Collegiate Institute) tied for 69th place at 15-over par 231 and freshman Mike Smith finished in 109th place at 30-over par 246.

The Red Storm will play next on Monday, April 9 at the Liberty Classic in Lynchburg, Virginia.
