QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's golf team put on a remarkable showing on the road at the University of Texas-San Antonio Invitational; winning the event in true shootout form, going 20-under for the tournament. The Red Storm, 20-under 844 (279, 285, 280) came from behind in the final round to win the title after trailing SMU by two strokes entering the last day of play. St. John's shot an astounding eight-under on the final day to push ahead of Southern Methodist and win its first tournament of the year. SMU finished the tournament at 17-under 847 (284, 278, 285). "It was fantastic to go on the road into Texas and really play well," said head coach Frank Darby. "This team went out and really stepped up, shooting 20-under to win." The Red Storm was led by sophomore sensation Mike Ballo Jr., who finished second overall with a 15-under 201 (65, 69, 67). Ballo's 65 in the first round was the low score of the day and his 67 in the final round was second only to Brent Long (16-under 200, 69, 68, 63) of Western Kentucky, who went on to win the event. Senior co-captain Keegan Bradley also played extremely well, ending play in seventh overall. Bradley finished with a four-under 212 (70,70,72). Junior Kevin Velardo ended strong to take a share of eighth place, with a three-under 213 (71, 74, 68). The Red Storm golf team finishes fall regular season play in outstanding fashion, winning the final tournament of the season and continuing a streak of medaling every event. St. John's finished with two third, two second, and one first place finish for the fall season.
