QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's men's golf team took third overall yesterday at the 23rd annual Georgetown Hoyas Invitational held at The Members Club at Four Streams in Beallsville, Md. The Red Storm ended the final round with a 10-over 862 (286, 283, 293) finishing thirty strokes ahead of fourth place University of Detroit Mercy. DePaul University took first with an amazing team score of two-under 850 (279, 284, 287) and the University of Richmond finished in second with a two-over 854 (293, 279, 282). "I thought the team played very well this weekend," said head coach Frank Darby. "Our hats are off to DePaul University and Richmond University who went out and played an amazing tournament." The Red Storm received great individual performances from sophomores Evan Beirne and Mike Ballo Jr. who finished in fifth and sixth respectively. Beirne recorded the low final round score of 67 to finish the event at even par 213 (75, 71, 67). Ballo Jr. had a great second round, shooting an impressive 68 and finishing the tournament at one-over 214 (70, 68, 76). Senior co-captain Keegan Bradley, five-over 218 (69, 74, 75) and junior Kevin Velardo, five-over 218 (73, 70, 75) finished tied for thirteenth. Greg Doherty, four-under 209 (70, 68, 71), of DePaul and Hunter Townsend, four-under 209 (75, 66, 68), of Richmond finished tied for first. St. John's next event is next Monday and Tuesday, October 29-30, at the Roadrunner Intercollegiate in Kerrville, Texas.
