Mission Inn Classic: Third Round Results
Howey-In-The-Hills, Fla. - The St. John's men's golf team (35-over 852) finished in sixth place overall at its host tournament, the Mission Inn Classic, which is held at the par 71 El Campeon G.C. at the Mission Inn Resort. Swirling winds and troublesome greens made low scores difficult for the 15 team field as Florida Gulf Coast took the overall title. Senior Casey Calmi and junior co-captain Mike Ballor Jr. finished tied for eighth place individually. Calmi finished with round scores of 68, 73 and 76. Ballo charged on the final day, carding a 71 to finish with a 4-over 217. Junior co-captain Evan Beirne finished tied for 37th with a 13-over 226. Senior Kevin Velardo scored a 17-over 230 which placed him 48th and sophomore Mark Costanza finished tied for 56th with a 20-over 233. Sophomore transfer John Kahlden, who competed as an individual, had a solid final round, posting a 72 and finished tied for 43rd with a 15-over 228. This is the Red Storm's fifth straight year competing at the Classic and its second straight year of hosting the event. Last year, the team finished second overall and actually moved into first in the third round before the round was cancelled due to rain. Head coach Frank Darby and the Red Storm golf team is back in action in two weeks when the squad competes in the Hoya Invitational in Beallsville, Md. The tournament is hosted by BIG EAST rival Georgetown and will be held on Tues.-Wed., Oct 18-19 at the Member's Club at Four Stream's G.C.
