The Red Storm men's basketball team made its 10th-annual Thanksgiving trip to the St. John's Bread and Life Soup Kitchen on Wednesday, serving turkey dinners to nearly 650 Brooklyn area residents. Director of Athletics Chris Monasch, head coach Norm Roberts and family, and the Red Storm team and coaching staff were joined as always by Bruce Beck of NBC 4 and his family. “Today was a great opportunity for our team to get involved in the community,” said Roberts. “It is great for our guys and it helps them realize how fortunate they are, and what great opportunities they have in front of them. We are all truly blessed to be in the places we are and to have the opportunities we have.” “This day is really special because we get to make so many people happy,” added junior guard and Brooklyn native Eugene Lawrence. “Some of these people don't have any place to go on Thanksgiving, and we get to put smiles on their faces with a good home-cooked meal." Paula Migliore, Campus Minister to Athletics, Mary Pat Beirne of Athletic Development and Fr. James Maher, University Vice President for Student Affairs and Chairman of the Board at St. John's Bread and Life, spearhead the annual community service event with the Red Storm. "I think it is always important for people to serve," said Maher. "Particularly for student-athletes, it gives them a chance to see the bigger world – the world that struggles and lives in poverty. By serving the people of this community it helps our student-athletes broaden their perspectives and helps them make a contribution to the community at the same time." Scenes from the day and Bruce Beck interviews from St. John's Bread and Life Soup Kitchen will air on NBC 4 during Thanksgiving Day. Red Storm fans can also catch news stories, interviews and photos in the following outlets over the next 48 hours: ABC 7 Eyewitness News, FOX 5, SportsNet New York, News 12 Brooklyn, the New York Daily News, the Brooklyn Star/Queens Ledger, The Torch and WSJU Radio.
