JAMAICA, N.Y. - Several former members of the St. John's University men's basketball team are competing this summer in various NBA pro summer leagues. Highlighting this group is 2003 graduate Marcus Hatten, who is playing for the Los Angeles Clippers in the Southern California Pro Summer League being held in Long Beach, California.
Hatten, playing in his first NBA summer league, went undrafted in last month's NBA Draft, but accepted an invitation to play for the Clippers. In his first game on July 8, he led the Clippers past the Memphis Grizzlies, 102-86, scoring a team-high 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from behind the arc and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line. In addition to his scoring, he pulled down six rebounds, dished out four assists and collected four steals in 24 minutes. Through the first five games in the league, Hatten is averaging 7.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.8 steals in just under 19 minutes per game. He is shooting 41.7 percent (10-for-24) from the field and 60.0 percent (3-for-5) from three-point range, but has only connected on 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the free-throw line. Hatten's next game will be Thursday against the Denver Nuggets at 7:30 pst.
Former New York Knick and 2000 graduate Lavor Postell is playing in Boston, Massachusetts at the Reebok Pro Summer League for the Dallas Mavericks. He played his first game for the Mavericks this Tuesday, scoring four points on 2-for-5 shooting and grabbing two rebounds in only 16 minutes. The Reebok Pro Summer League will continue until July 20, with Postell and the Mavericks playing another four games. His next game will be Wednesday against the New York Knicks at noon.
Also participating in Southern California Pro Summer League is 1994 graduate Shawnelle Scott, who has caught on with the Houston Rockets. Through his first three games, Scott, a second round draft pick in 1994, is averaging 6.0 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in just over 20 minutes per game. His best game came against Toronto on July 12 when he scored eight points and pulled down eight boards.
Zendon Hamilton, a 1998 graduate, will play in the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue for the host Utah Jazz. Hamilton begins play for the Jazz on Friday, July 18 against the Phoenix Suns. The league runs from July 18-26, with Hamilton and the Jazz playing seven games.
