HATTEN, STANLEY RECEIVE INAUGURAL COLLEGE BASKETBALL AWARDS FROM SCHOOL NEWS NATIONWIDE AT MICKEY MANTLE'S ON APRIL 12; CARNESECCA ALSO FETED WITH HONORARY AWARD
 

 
Jamaica, New York -- St. John's University junior guard's Marcus Hatten and Andre Stanley will be recipient's at the first ever SNN Inaugural College Basketball Awards on Friday, April 12 at Mickey Mantle's Restaurant from 11-1 p.m.

The awards luncheon will honor the outstanding college players and coaches, men and women in the New York Metropolitan Area from this past season. Hatten has been tabbed as the Metropolitan Area Player of the Year for his stellar 2001-2002 campaign. The Baltimore native averaged 20.1 points per game while finishing the 32 game schedule amassing 644 poitns. In addition, he led the BIG EAST Conference in scoring with a 22.3 average in 16 games.

Hatten will receive "The Lou Carnesecca Award" named for the former Hall of Fame coach who was a legendary fixture at St. John's for 24 seasons.

Stanley, a native of Brooklyn and John Jay High School will receive one of two Citizenship Awards for leadership, sportsmanship and work ethic presented by a representative of the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce.

His story is unique, making the team as a walk-on for head coach Mike Jarvis and then the last half of the season Stanley was a key starter on a team that won 20 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Stanley averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds in 20 games while starting 13 for the Red Storm.

Other New York area awardees will include Manhattan's Luis Flores (Citizenship Award) and Bobby Gonzalez (Al McGuire "Coach of the Year" Award) as well as Fordham's William "Smush" Parker (Andrew "Fuzzy" Levane "Rising Star Award").

The women's Player of the Year (Nancy Lieberman-Cline Award) will be the University of Connecticut's Sue Byrd. Byrd's head coach Geno Auriemma will be awarded the Carol Blazejowski Award as the Metropolitan Area "Coach of the Year." Rebecca Richmond of Rutgers University will be the recipient of the Women's Citizenship Award.
