Jamaica, N.Y. (Ticker) -- Junior Willie Shaw (Bronx, N.Y.) scored eight of his 14 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes to help St. John's (17-13) rally past Boston University, 62-57, in first-round National Invitation Tournament play tonight at Alumni Hall.
Shaw had two 3-pointers and a free throw in a 12-3 burst that erased a 46-42 deficit. Freshman Tim Doyle (Merrick, N.Y.) fed Shaw for two of his assists to spark the comeback and contributed four points with his inspired play. In addition, senior Anthony Glover's (Bronx, N.Y.) follow shot with 5:10 to play put St. John's on top for good, 47-46. Shaw added another free throw with 20 seconds left as the Red Storm went 6-for-6 from the line in the final 33 seconds to hold the Terriers at bay. Head coach Mike Jarvis earned his first NIT win in his career after four defeats and defeated his alma mater and former employer (Boston University), where he amassed 101 wins from 1985 to 1990 while roaming the sidelines for the Terriers. Senior Marcus Hatten (Baltimore, Md.) scored 12 points and freshman Elijah Ingram (East Orange, N.J.) contributed 10 for St. John's, which made its 27th NIT appearance after Thursday's loss to Boston College in the ConAgra BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals. Rashad Bell netted 18 points for the Terriers (20-11), who lost to Vermont in the America East finals. St. John's will next face the Virginia Cavaliers (16-15), an 89-73 winner over Brown University, in second-round NIT play on Monday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Alumni Hall.
Tickets will go on sale for the Virginia Game at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (March 20) at the St. John's Ticket Office at Alumni Hall or by phone by dialing 1-888-GO-STORM. The game will not be televised but broadcasters Mike Crispino and Anthony Fucilli will call all the action live on ESPN 1050AM radio.
