St. John’s Baseball Players Named All-Stars in Summer Leagues

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- Several members of the St. John’s University baseball team have been selected to play in the all-star game for their respective summer leagues.

Senior shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.), a first-team All-BIG EAST selection who was named a third-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Association, was selected to play in the Northwoods League All-Star Game, which will be held on Wednesday, July 16 in Wisconsin. Rozema is the starting shortstop for the Madison (Wisc.) Mallards, where he is fourth on the team in batting with a .300 (39-for-130) average. The Mallards won the Northwoods League Northern Division first half title, ensuring a postseason berth, led by the Red Storm’s team captain, who was first on the team in runs scored (29), hits (39) and stolen bases (18).

Six members of the Red Storm baseball team, including two incoming junior college transfers, were selected to play in the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game.

Sophomore pitcher Anthony Varvaro (Staten Island, N.Y.), junior pitcher Jim Wladyka (Rutherford, N.J.), junior infielder P.J. Antoniato (Levittown, N.Y.), junior catcher Joe Burke (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore outfielder Greg Thomson (Levittown, N.Y.) were all named to the Kaiser Division All-Star team, while sophomore first baseman Eddie Schultz (Flemington, N.J.) was selected to the Wolff Division All-Stars.

Varvaro, Antoniato and Burke are all playing for the Metro Cadets, who are 11-7 at mid-season. Varvaro is 1-1 with a 2.51 earned run average, while Burke is batting .368. Thomson, playing for the Long Island Collegians, leads his team with a .315 batting average, while adding four doubles, three triples, two home runs, 13 runs batted in and seven stolen bases.

Schultz is batting .371 for the Jersey Pilots (4-18), and leads the team with 10 doubles, two home runs and 13 runs batted in.

Two members of the St. John’s baseball team – junior third baseman Jim Martin (Norwood, Mass.) and junior catcher Blake Hershelman (Georgetown, Del.) – are playing for the Thread City (Conn.) Tides of the New England Collegiate Baseball League, while senior outfielder Anthony DeRosa (Salem, N.H.) is with the Mill City (Mass.) All-Americans. Martin is batting .292 with three doubles for the Tides, who are 9-16 and in fourth place in the NECBL Southern Division.
