JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. John’s University junior shortstop Mike Rozema (Fair Lawn, N.J.) enjoyed a fantastic 2003 season and capped it off by earning several league, regional and even a national honor from one organization. On Sunday in Omaha, Nebraska at the College World Series, the American Baseball Coaches Association gave Rozema the ultimate honor, as he was named to the ABCA/Rawlings Division I All-America team. It was the second All-American honor for the Red Storm captain, who earned third-team honors for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association last week.

Rozema, who led St. John’s to a 29-27 overall record, finished the season batting .408, which led the team, ranked third in the BIG EAST and was 27th in the nation. His .408 average was tied for the fifth-best single season mark in school history and he is one of only eight players at the school to bat .400 or higher. He led the Red Storm in nearly every offensive category, including batting average, at-bats (196), hits (80), runs scored (44), runs batted in (33) and on-base percentage (.460). He is only the second player in program history to reach 80 hits in one season.

In BIG EAST games, he ranked second in the league with a .439 batting average, and was also among the top-10 in hits (2nd, 43), stolen bases (5th, 9), doubles (3rd, 9), total bases (2nd, 59), on-base percentage (4th, .491) and slugging percentage (5th, .602). He had a career-high .969 fielding percentage, which was the second-best mark of any BIG EAST shortstop this season.

Rozema was a first-team All-BIG EAST selection at shortstop, named a third-team All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, named the District II Player of the Year by the NCBWA, and was selected to the ABCA/Rawlings All-Northeast Region First team, in addition to the honor received this weekend.

In other St. John’s baseball news, senior Mike Tamulionis (West Bridgewater, Mass.), who was a 31st round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major League Baseball Draft, signed with the organization last week. Tamulionis reported to the team last week and will begin his first professional season with the Class A New Jersey Cardinals of the New York-Penn League.

Junior Joe Reid (Rutherford, N.J.), who was selected in the 33rd of the draft by the Cleveland Indians, is pitching this summer for the Harwich Mariners in the famed Cape Cod League. In two games so far for the Mariners, Reid is 0-0 with a 2.08 earned run average. He allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts in four innings of relief during the team’s loss to Wareham on Sunday. Recent graduate Tom Klemm (Salem, N.H.) signed a contract on Tuesday with the Brockton (Mass.) Rox of the independent Northern League. Klemm is scheduled to make his professional debut this week.
