JAMAICA, N.Y. - St. John's University Kevin McGerry (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) was selected in the fourth round (120th pick overall) by the Oakland Athletics during Monday's Major League Baseball Draft, highlighting a day that saw three Red Storm student-athletes selected.McGerry led the way among the draftees, joined by senior second baseman Matt Galante (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), who was taken by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 13th round, and junior Keith Stamler (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township), who was taken in the 18th round by the Texas Rangers. Kevin Cust (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata), who signed a letter-of-intent to attend St. John's last fall, was taken by the Atlanta Braves in the 11th round (340th pick overall).A second-team All-BIG EAST selection this season, McGerry led St. John's with a 6-3 record and a 3.92 earned run average. He struck out 89 batters in 78 innings, leading the conference. McGerry, a third-team preseason All-American this season, has posted a 20-8 record with a 3.49 ERA in three seasons with the Red Storm. While being selected in the fourth round, McGerry was only the third player selected by the A's, who did not have a first round pick, and was the first pitcher taken by the team. "It feels good," McGerry said from his home in Philadelphia. "It's over with and I'm really hoping a good situation can come out of it. I hadn't spoken to them personally, and that happened when the (San Francisco) Giants drafted me in high school, but it's a great feeling. I'm in Cloud Nine."
