St. John's University senior catcher Mike Niksa (Malverne, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) was named first-team All-BIG EAST, it was announced tonight at the conference's pre-tournament dinner.Niksa was the lone representative for the Red Storm (29-22, 8-15 BIG EAST) on the first team and he is the first St. John's player to be named all-conference as a catcher since Anthony Criscuolo in 1991.A four-year letterwinner for the Red Storm, Niksa only became the starting catcher this year, following the graduation of Robert Fierro, a three-year starter. He played in 46 of 51 games this season, starting 39 behind the plate.Niksa finished the year batting .338 (45-for-133), finishing second on the team with 11 doubles, and added three home runs and 25 RBI. He committed only three errors all season, posting a 99.0 fielding percentage and threw out 11 runners.
